time of Protocycladic civilisation, Hellenistic and Roman times.<br \/>\nKoufonissia, along with the rest of the Cyclades were conquered by the Venetians and the Turks.<br \/>\nIn 1830 that became inhabitants, it constitutes the seat of the Municipal Department of Koufonissia of the Naxos Municipality.<br \/>\nIn the churches of St George and St Nicholas there are Early Christian artefacts.<br \/>\nThe village was built on the ruins of a Roman settlement.<br \/>\nOn Koufonissi, which boasts the largest fishing fleet in Greece in proportion to its population, you will enjoy fresh fish and since 1968 with the only exception of summer activities. It has an area of 4.3 km\u00b2.<br \/>\nThe few buildings standing are predominantly fishermen\u2019s storage sheds with a very few residences. The restaurant Venetsanos is open in the summer months, in an idyllic setting.<br \/>\nThe principal sight on the island is the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, built during the Ottoman occupation in 1561,
